An exhibition of treasures from the tomb of legendary Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun is to go on display at the brand new Museum of Museums at the Trafford Centre.
“Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures” recreates the moment archaeologist Howard Carter entered the long-lost, treasure-laden burial chambers of Egypt’s boy king who died at just 19.
The exhibition will take visitors on a journey through time into the lost wonders of ancient Egypt and gives them a unique opportunity to look through Carter’s eyes and experience the amazing moment of his discovery of Tutankhamun’s three burial chambers for themselves.
The recreation has been made possible with the assistance of leading Egyptologists and uses sketches and diary notes made by Howard Carter and original photographs taken by exploration photographer Harry Burton.
More than 4,000 square metres of exhibition space and state-of-the-art multimedia technology will bring to life the story of Tutankhamun and the fascinating cultural and spiritual world of ancient Egypt; its funerary cults, gods and mysterious hieroglyphic script.
Replicas of 1,000 burial artefacts, intended to equip the young Pharaoh on his journey to the afterlife, have been painstakingly reproduced to scale by expert Egyptian craftsmen and can be viewed in the recreated burial chambers and in an extensive and detailed display.
These include jewellery, cult objects, amulets, coffers, chests, chairs, weapons, a stunning golden chariot, large golden shrines and the iconic death mask; a rare and beautiful sight not seen in the UK since the original mask was displayed at the British Museum in 1972.
The exhibition has already been a massive hit in Europe, drawing more than 1,700,000 visitors.
In a first for Manchester, “Tutankhamun – His Tomb and His Treasures” opens on 22 October at the Museum of Museums. This new exhibition space at the Trafford Centre has been open only since June this year and is now set to put the venue on the worldwide visitor attraction map.
The Manchester exhibition will include a brand new display entitled ‘Howard Carter – The Discoverer of Tutankhamun’ curated by leading UK Egyptologist Dr. Jaromir Malek, Keeper of the Tutankhamun Archives at the Griffith Institute at Oxford University.
He says, “The attention which is paid to detail is outstanding. This exhibition can do things which no other is able to. It’s educational and information value surpasses that of the usual Tutankhamun shows. The intention to inform and to approach the topic seriously is unmistakably felt from the beginning to the end.”
The exhibition will run until27 February 2011 and will be open daily from 10am until 7pm. Tickets can be booked online at the Tutankhamun – His Tomb and Treasures website.
