From outside his constituency office in Didsbury, Withington MP John Leech today launched a new scheme that encourages shoppers to spend their money at local independent stores.
The TAGPassitOn shop local scheme is expanding by the day – currently more than 160 businesses in Manchester are taking part, including 35 in Chorlton, 40 in Withington and Didsbury, and 22 in Levenshulme.
Tagpassiton benefits local charities and community groups such as parent-teacher associations, churches, social movements. The scheme is looking for lots of different groups to get involved and tell their members and supporters about the scheme and raise funds this way.
For a small fee of £5 a year, shoppers receive a TAGPassitOn card and fob that they can use at participating local independent shops to obtain discounts and deals. Every £5 card bought from a charity or community group raises £2.50 for their cause.
Leech said: “This is a great scheme and I must congratulate the people behind it. It is extremely important that we support and protect our local independent shops. I will certainly be encouraging my friends and constituents to join the scheme.”
All the independent businesses taking part will display Tagpassiton’s distinctive, colourful hand logo in their shop windows, on their websites and promotional materials. Many outlets also display Tagpassiton posters announcing special offers. Some of these change frequently to provide shoppers with greater variety, especially food outlets.
Carol from Tagpassiton said, “The recent bar closures in Chorlton just show how vital it is to support your independent retailers, they help make south Manchester so unique and we must strive to protect them.”
To buy a card, either visit your local charity or community group to see if they are involved so that they £2.50 for each card purchased or visit the TAGPassItOn website. For each card purchased, 50p is donated to a chosen local community organisation.
